Colchester Institute

Saunders Boston Architects have developed a strong working relationship with the Institute following a number of successfully completed projects:

£6.4M new STEM learning resource building providing 4,000m2 of new floor space comprising workshops, laboratories, classrooms, study and seminar spaces as well as a new 700m2 library housing over 80,000 items of reference material and incorporating both ICT, seminar and quiet study facilities.

£1.9M refurbishment and extension project included works to the Colchester campus main entrance, reception, student services, management facilities and additional teaching spaces. Large-scale asbestos removal, significant internal demolition, structural repairs and reconfiguration of existing 1950’s buildings were undertaken whilst all facilities (within the 4-storey building) remained fully occupied and operational.

£400K refurbishment at the Braintree and Colchester campuses. At Braintree, the scope included refurbishment of the reception foyer, extensive remodelling of the ground floor layout to incorporate a new plumbing workshop, refurbishment of various teaching spaces, a new laboratory, new WCs, new accessible WC/shower, shower and changing facilities.  At the Colchester campus, works focussed on the refurbishment of corridors and extensive reconfiguration of the student union with defined spaces for the shop and office as well as quiet study, enterprise, entertainment, gaming and cyber zones.

“A huge thank you, for the excellent design and management of these projects, there were lots of complex areas which were over two sites and we are receiving some truly wonderful feedback and I am so appreciative of your continuous desire to achieve the very best for us. The feedback from staff and students has been amazing, like none I have ever heard at the College and the colours are a real talking point and bring such vibrancy to the environment. Thank you so much.”
